snapshot_in_progress_exception: snapshot_in_progress_exception

Elasticsearch

What does it mean?

The requested operation was rejected because it conflicts with a snapshot currently in progress. For example, an attempt to delete/close an index or modify the repository while a snapshot is being taken is blocked.

Why does it happen?

While a snapshot was still running, an attempt was made to delete/close indices included in that snapshot, remove/modify the repository, or start another conflicting snapshot/restore operation. Elasticsearch does not allow these conflicting operations, to preserve consistency.

How to fix it

Wait for the running snapshot to finish: monitor progress with GET _snapshot/_status. If the operation really must be canceled, stop it by deleting the snapshot: DELETE _snapshot/repo/snapshot_name (this aborts the running snapshot). After the snapshot completes or is canceled, rerun your original operation (index deletion, repository change).
