42P17: invalid_object_definition

PostgreSQL

What does it mean?

An object's definition (function, collation, trigger, rule etc.) is invalid. PostgreSQL indicates that the given definition is internally inconsistent or unacceptable; the object cannot be created/altered as written.

Why does it happen?

Common causes: contradictory attribute combinations in a function (e.g. marked IMMUTABLE but behaving as volatile), an invalid collation/character set definition, or an unsuitable trigger/rule definition. Inconsistent options in row-level security (RLS) and some DDL can also trigger it.

How to fix it

Read the error details (DETAIL/HINT) to determine which part of the definition was rejected. Align function volatility labels with the actual behavior (VOLATILE/STABLE/IMMUTABLE). Verify that the collation name exists in pg_collation. Fix the definition according to the documented syntax/rules and run it again.
