Take a controlfile trace backup

OracleMaintenance

Command

-- Generate a trace (CREATE CONTROLFILE script):
ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE
  AS '/tmp/create_controlfile.sql' REUSE;

-- Binary controlfile copy:
ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO '/backup/controlfile_orcl.ctl' REUSE;

What it does

Produces the SQL script (trace) that recreates the controlfile and/or a binary copy of it.

When to use it

After structural changes (adding datafiles/redo), when preparing for disaster recovery, or to recreate the controlfile if all copies are lost.

Caution

Refresh the trace file whenever the structure changes; an old script creates the wrong structure. REUSE overwrites an existing file. No risk to the system, but store the generated file securely.
