CHECKPOINT;

What it does

Writes dirty buffers to disk and creates a checkpoint record; advances the recovery starting point.

When to use it

Before a backup, in a maintenance window, or to sync to disk before stopping the server.

Caution

Can generate heavy I/O; do not run it in production during peak hours. Only a superuser or (PG15+) the pg_checkpoint role can run it.
