40613: Database is not currently available (Azure SQL)

SQL Server

What does it mean?

In Azure SQL the target database is not reachable at the moment. Usually transient; it appears briefly while the platform moves, reconfigures or recovers the database.

Why does it happen?

Automatic scaling/failover, patching, load balancing or resource relocation on the Azure side; rarely a longer platform event. Connections are rejected until the database comes back online.

How to fix it

Wait briefly and retry; this is a transient error. Implement automatic retry with exponential backoff in the application; Azure SDK/retry libraries recognize this error code as transient. If the problem persists, check Azure Service Health and regional incidents. For high availability, consider geo-replication/a failover group.
