ERR Client sent AUTH, but no password is set: ERR AUTH <password> called without any password configured for the default user (Redis 6+) / ERR Client sent AUTH, but no password is set (Redis <6)

Redis

What does it mean?

The client tried to authenticate with AUTH but no password (requirepass) or ACL password is defined on the server. AUTH was rejected because there is no credential to verify. Redis 6+ returns "ERR AUTH <password> called without any password configured for the default user. Are you sure your configuration is correct?" in this case; "Client sent AUTH, but no password is set" is the pre-Redis 6 message.

Why does it happen?

requirepass empty on the server, the client sending AUTH unnecessarily, a password defined in the connection string while the server has none, or a configuration mismatch.

How to fix it

If the server does not require a password, remove the AUTH command/password setting from the client. If you want password protection, set requirepass on the server (CONFIG SET requirepass password) or define a password for the ACL user. Make client and server configuration consistent.
