index_template_missing_exception: Index template is missing

Elasticsearch

What does it mean?

The referenced index template was not found. A nonexistent template name was used while getting, deleting or performing an operation based on a template.

Why does it happen?

The template name is misspelled; the template was deleted earlier; the legacy template API was confused with the composable index template API; or the template was never created. It also appears when a setup script did not complete.

How to fix it

List existing templates. For composable templates: GET _index_template or GET _index_template/name. For legacy templates: GET _template. Retry with the correct API and name. If the template is missing, create it: PUT _index_template/name {...}. Make delete/update scripts idempotent so they do not fail when the template is absent.
