index_closed_exception: index_closed_exception

Elasticsearch

What does it mean?

The target index is closed. A closed index does not serve read/write requests, so the operation could not be performed.

Why does it happen?

The index was previously closed with the close API, closed during maintenance/ILM operations, or deactivated to save resources.

How to fix it

Reopen the index: POST /index_name/_open. After opening, wait for the shards to be allocated (green/yellow). Investigate why the index was closed (ILM policy, manual action). Review the strategy of keeping rarely accessed indices closed.
