unavailable_shards_exception: unavailable_shards_exception

Elasticsearch

What does it mean?

One or more shards required for the operation are not available, so the request (usually a write) could not complete. Not enough active shard copies were found.

Why does it happen?

Unassigned shards due to a node crash/departure, a disk watermark breach, missing replicas, an unmet wait_for_active_shards condition, or red cluster health.

How to fix it

Check cluster and shard health: GET _cluster/health and GET _cat/shards?v. Investigate why shards are unassigned: GET _cluster/allocation/explain. Bring down nodes back up, free disk space (watermark), and review replica settings. If needed, set wait_for_active_shards appropriately.
