query_shard_exception: query_shard_exception

Elasticsearch

What does it mean?

A query failed while executing on a particular shard. It usually occurs because the query is incompatible with the mapping or has an invalid structure.

Why does it happen?

Querying a nonexistent field or a field of the wrong type, attempting aggregation/sorting on a text field (fielddata disabled), invalid query syntax, wrong analysis, or an incompatible field type.

How to fix it

Review the field/reason in the error details. Check the mapping of the queried field: GET /index/_mapping. For sorting/aggregation, use the keyword sub-field (field.keyword) instead of text. Fix the query syntax and make sure field types are compatible with the query.
