script_exception: script_exception
ElasticsearchWhat does it mean?
An error occurred while compiling or executing a script (usually Painless). The script is written incorrectly or threw an exception at runtime.
Why does it happen?
Painless syntax error, null value access, type mismatch, use of a nonexistent field/variable, exceeding the script compilation limit, or a disallowed API call.
How to fix it
Review the compile/runtime details in the error message. Fix the script syntax and field access; add null checks (e.g. doc['field'].size() > 0). Make frequently used scripts parameterized (stored/params) so the compilation limit is not exceeded. Use correct field names and types.
